Gregory Gale

Gregory Gale works in Film, Television, Broadway/Off-Broadway, Opera, International Productions, Regional Theater, Las Vegas, Ballet and special events. Based in Brooklyn, NY with extensive experience in a variety of categories, Gregory combines a love of fashion history and design, and working with costume artisans worldwide to make his productions come to life. Gregory grew up outside of Seattle, Washington and moved to NYC to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and is known for his meticulous character-driven designs.

Gregory designed the feature film, The Mental State written and directed by James Camali, which is currently in the film festival circuit and won best feature New Jersey International Film Festival 2022. The film is a realistic look at the importance of mental health treatment for high school students set in modern-day Kentucky. Gregory designed the film short, Real Drag written and directed by Brad Davis, which appeared in several film festivals and is about the inclusivity of drag. Gregory collaborated with Camille Brown to style the dancers for John Legend’s appearance on NBC New Year’s Eve Live 2019 performing “Purple Snowflake”, and styled comedy sketch pieces for Leslie Jones and Chrissy Teigen. Gregory appeared on Food Network’s “Will Work For Food” with legendary chocolatier and pastry chef Richard Capizzi of Per Se and Bouchon to create a superhero chocolate fashion look inspired by Jane Fonda in “Barbarella” and in collaboration with Grand Marnier. Gregory’s designs for the Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac starring Kevin Kline, Jennifer Garner, Daniel Sunjata, and Chris Sarandon may be seen on Amazon Prime. Gregory collaborated with Director and Choreographer Daniel Ezralow on a dance sequence for the Papal Mass Opening Ceremony 2008 at Yankee Stadium, which was broadcast worldwide. He styled the latest vinyl and digital album covers for the band Blood Cultures, and these styles appeared in several of their videos.

Gregory was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Rock of Ages, a musical that uses the classic rock hits from the 1980s. He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play for his work on Cyrano de Bergerac, set in 17th century France. He has been nominated for four Lucille Lortel Awards and won for Fairy Cakes desc written and directed by Douglas Carter Beane, and The Voysey Inheritance desc directed by David Warren and adapted by David Mamet. He was nominated for five Henry Hewes Design Awards, three Drama Desk Awards and two Connecticut Circle Critics’ Awards. He is the recipient of the Irene Sharaff Young Master award and perhaps his favorite honor: “Best Dressed” graduating class Issaquah High School.

Broadway designs include Cyrano de Bergerac; Rock of Ages (plus London, Las Vegas, U.S. national tour, Toronto, Australia, U.K. Tour, and Norwegian Cruise Lines.); Arcadia with Billy Crudup, Margaret Colin and Tom Riley; The Wedding Singer (plus U.S. national tour) with Laura Benati, Kevin Cahoon, and Stephen Lynch; Urinetown (plus U.S. national tour and Toronto); and Band in Berlin.  Off-Broadway designs include World Premieres of Douglas Carter Beane’s To Wong Foo, Robin Hood and Fairy Cakes with Mo Rocca, Kuhoo Verma, Julie Halston, Ann Harada, Jackie Hoffman, and Jason Tam; The Voysey Inheritance at the Atlantic Theater; The Milliner; The Third Story written by and starring Charles Busch for MCC Theater; Pig Farm directed by John Rando with Denis O’Hare, Katie Finneran, and Logan Marshall-Green for The Roundabout Theater Company; The Country Club with Cynthia Nixon, Amy Sedaris, and Fred Weller; and The Torch-Bearers with Marian Seldes, Faith Prince, and David Garrison.

Regional designs include Thoroughly Modern Millie; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; High Button Shoes; Seven Brides for Seven Brothers; and The Pajama Game, all for Goodspeed Musicals. World Premiere of The Roof of the World at Kansas City Rep; A Flea in Her Ear at the Williamstown Theater Festival; and Rich and Famous at ACT.

Opera designs include El Milagro del Recuerdo, libretto and direction by Leonard Foglia and composed by Javier Martinez; The Prince of Players directed by Michael Gieleta with libretto and music by the mighty Carlisle Floyd. Both of which were world premieres at Houston Grand Opera. Additionally, Gregory designed Romeo et Juliette directed by Tomer Zvulun and choreographed by Donald Byrd for Houston Grand Opera; the World Premiere of An American Soldier about the death of soldier Danny Chen directed by Matthew Ozawa, written by David Henry Huang and composed by Huang Ro at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.

Las Vegas productions include Surf, a Beach Boys musical at Planet Hollywood; and Rock of Ages at The Venetian. Ballet designs includes Fouràone, a new full-length ballet with commissioned score and arrangements by Paul Kerekes and Le Revue de Cuisine both choreographed by Christopher Caines. Special Events include recreating fifteen-foot-tall versions of Carrie Bradshaw’s famous wedding gown for an HBO Sex and the City release party with Paradigm Shift Worldwide and styling a group of dancers and singers including Lillias White and Euan Morton for the 59th Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Opening Ceremony World Conference directed and choreographed by Joyce Chittick, which was broadcast worldwide.

Internationally, Gregory designed Your Alice, a contemplation of the origins of Alice in Wonderland, at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and BAM; sets and costumes for Singapura, a new musical premiering at the revitalized Capitol Theater Singapore; and Rock of Ages on the West End.

Gregory is currently working with Shoko Kambara on a streaming version of their reconceptualized Nutcracker and with John Carrafa on an immersive production based on Tarot. His Opera designs for El Milagro del Recuerdo are traveling to Fort Worth Opera, San Diego Opera and Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, and Romeo et Juliette is appearing at Atlanta Opera and Fort Worth Opera.
